In the dental sector, in\nthis case, processes such as diagnostics and dental printing have changed\nradically, becoming quicker and much more effective thanks to intraoral\nscanners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using intraoral\nscanners significantly improves not only the final result of the treatment, but\nalso the patient&#8217;s experience, provided the scan is done properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong>why is the quality of the scan so important<\/strong>?\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A poor scan can\nlimit the patient&#8217;s diagnosis and treatment design, therefore a good scanning strategy\nis primordial to avoid possible errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>Some of the most common errors are usually:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-dark-gray-background-color\">\u00b7 Inaccuracy of the scan in bridges  <br>\u00b7 Insufficient detail along the margin lines  <br>\u00b7 The scan stopping due to broken teeth  <br>\u00b7 Spending too long on the scan <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.avinent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/06\/Imagen1-1024x560.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1448\" \/><figcaption>Common errors when scanning incisors<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>3Shape, one of the most significant providers of intraoral scanners on the market, recommends following this scan protocol with 5 simple steps for perfect results using its TRIOS scanner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A good scanning strategy is primordial to avoid possible errors.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The scan path\nconsists of 3 sweeps to guarantee good data coverage of all the surfaces: <strong>occlusal<\/strong>, <strong>lingual<\/strong> and <strong>buccal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>occlusal sweep<\/strong> always comes first. It\nshould start at the first molar (if it is an antagonist) or the preparation\n(for scanning gums before collapse due to traction). Scan and wait 3 to 5\nclicks before moving the scanner constantly and slowly 0 to 5 mm above the\nteeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure you cover\nthe lingual and labial sides, moving slowly as you scan the first central\nsweep, as the central teeth require more attention span than the molars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color\"><strong>Step 1<\/strong>: Start with the lower quadrant of the antagonist<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.avinent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/06\/Imagen2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1449\" width=\"107\" height=\"163\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1<\/strong>: Start with the antagonist. Start directly at the occlusion (first molar), then sweep along the occlusion.  <br><strong>2<\/strong>: Continue along the lower jaw. Rotate 45-90\u00ba toward the lingual side and slide up to the second molar.  <br><strong>3<\/strong>: Rotate toward the buccal side and complete the sweep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color\"><strong>Step 2<\/strong>: Continue with upper quadrant of the preparation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.avinent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/06\/Imagen3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1450\" width=\"106\" height=\"154\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>1: Start directly at the occlusion (first molar), then sweep along the occlusion to the preparation.  <br><strong>2<\/strong>: Scan the preparation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">\u00b7 Go to the occlusal side of the preparation.  <br>\u00b7 Rotate toward the palatine side.  <br>\u00b7 Rotate toward the buccal side.  <br>\u00b7 Rotate almost 90\u00ba to obtain a greater angle for the distal and mesial contact points.  <br>\u00b7 Rotate to the occlusal again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3<\/strong>: Continue sliding along the occlusion.<span><b> <\/b><\/span><br><strong>4<\/strong>: Rotate 45-90\u00ba toward the buccal side and complete the sweep on one side of the preparation.  <br><strong>5<\/strong>: Roll toward the palatine side and complete the sweep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color\"><strong>Step 3<\/strong>:  Continue along the lower complete arch of the antagonist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.avinent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/06\/Imagen4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1452\" width=\"176\" height=\"153\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1<\/strong>: Start directly at the occlusion (first molar), then sweep along the occlusion. Move the scanner slowly when passing over the central teeth.<span><b> <\/b><\/span> <br><strong>2<\/strong>: Rotate 45-90\u00ba toward the lingual side and slide up to the second molar. Move the scanner slowly when passing over the central teeth. <br><strong>2<\/strong>: Scan the preparation: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Go to the occlusal side of the preparation.  <br>\u00b7 Rotate to the palatine side  <br>\u00b7 Rotate toward the buccal side.  <br>\u00b7 Rotate almost 90 degrees to obtain a better angle for the distal and mesial contact points.  <br>\u00b7 Rotate to the occlusal again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3<\/strong>: Continue sliding along the occlusion.<span><b> <\/b><\/span><br><strong>4<\/strong>: Rotate 45-90\u00ba toward the buccal side and complete the sweep on one side of the preparation.  <br><strong>5<\/strong>: Roll toward the palatine side and complete the sweep.  <br><strong>6<\/strong>: Complete the scan on the other side of the preparation, with an occlusal sweep first.  <br><strong>7<\/strong>: Make the buccal sweep.  <br><strong>8<\/strong>: Make the palatine sweep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color\"><strong>Step 5<\/strong>:  Finally, <strong>scan the bite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.avinent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/06\/Imagen7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1454\" width=\"230\" height=\"138\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1<\/strong>: Insert the tip of scanner into the patient&#8217;s mouth on the buccal side of the molars.  <br><strong>2<\/strong>: Ask the patient to bite down firmly, and start to scan at the most distal position, moving gradually forward.  <br><strong>3<\/strong>: Align the scan area in the bite to see 50\/50 of the upper and lower teeth. Keep scanning until the two scans fit together and the mandibles are aligned with the blue bite.  <br><strong>4<\/strong>: The scan must cover at least 3 or 4 teeth for a perfect alignment.  <br><strong>5<\/strong>: For a full-arch examination, repeat steps 1 to 4 for the opposite side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>+Bonus Track:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-dark-gray-background-color\">\u00b7 The greatest challenge when scanning is controlling the soft tissue, as it can confuse the scanner, slowing or even stopping the scan.   <br>\u00b7 In the case of multiple preparations, focus on scanning the preparations before the gums collapse.
